COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A construction worker is dead after being hit by a car in Pulaski County around 2:20 p.m. Monday.

According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, an 88-year-old Waynesville man was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer east on Spruce Road, one mile west of Highway H, when he didn't notice a construction worker conducting traffic control and hit him.

The construction worker, a 35-year-old Warrensburg man, was pronounced dead on scene, according to the report. The driver was uninjured.

The worker was not a MoDOT employee. According to a Missouri Department of Transportation spokeswoman, the construction worker was directing traffic for a contractor working on a MoDOT construction project on Outer Road 44.

According to MoDOT, crews were installing guardrails in the area, which closed one lane.

The Trailblazer had moderate damage and was driven from the scene. The report states the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
