INSIDER BLOG: Storms bring isolated hail threat Monday night

Park inside tonight if you can; large hail will be possible with the strongest storms overnight tonight.

SETUP:

A stationary front is set up over northern Missouri this morning. Warm, moist air will build south of this front, leading to a warm, muggy day. Soon, this front will wash out and fade. A stronger cold front from the north will help trigger storms late in the evening. Storms will likely develop along this front in northern Missouri. From there, storms will drift south and east overnight.

TIMING:

Storms develop north of, or in northern mid-Missouri. Confidence is low on exactly where storms will develop, other than near the boundary in the north. Showers are likely to grow quickly into Thunderstorms. These storms will move east, and the line of storms may slowly drop south with time. Storms will weaken overnight, becoming widespread showers on Tuesday morning.

IMPACTS:

Hail will be the greatest concern with our strongest thunderstorms. Some storms may be capable of damaging winds, but conditions will become increasingly less supportive of this with time. Heavy rain is likely, but flash flooding is not.
