MU student starts petition to keep Memorial Stadium name
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A student at the University of Missouri has started a petition to try and keep the current name of the school's football stadium.
MU announced on Feb. 10 it would sell corporate naming rights for Memorial Stadium. Once the university finds a buyer, that will mean that the 'Memorial' could be removed from the name of the stadium, in place of its corporate buyer.
As of Friday night, the petition on Change.org - titled "Save the Memorial Stadium name at University of Missouri" - has more than 200 signatures. It lists the signature goal as 500 signers.
The stadium was named "Memorial Stadium" in the 1920s to honor the more than 100 alumni who died in World War I.
"It is not merely a name; it is a living testament to the valor and sacrifices of our university's alumni and students – a true heritage site that resonates with respect and gratitude," the petition post said.
"Selling the naming rights and possibly removing 'Memorial' from its title would set a grave precedent, signifying the commodification of our shared history and tradition."
