COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Boone County prosecutors charged a man on Wednesday with unlawful possession of a firearm in a 2018 central Columbia shooting.

Cortez Brimmage, 29, of Columbia, is accused of a shooting near the area of Fir Place and Larch Court on May 5, 2018.

Court documents say Columbia police officers were called to the area for a disturbance at around 2:30 a.m.

Brimmage's probable cause statement said officers heard multiple gunshots when police arrived at the scene. Police say Brimmage was later seen in the area holding a gun.

The date of the incident coincides with an officer-involved shooting in that area.

Police said in 2018 that one officer fired toward a suspect, who was later found with a gunshot wound, in the same location described in the probable cause statement. Officers said at the time that a 27-year-old was arrested and a 31-year-old victim was taken to the hospital.

Police say another firearm was found near the scene.

The probable cause statement says Brimmage is a felon and is prohibited from having a gun.

Brimmage is also charged in the death of 40-year-old David Lee Morgan, who was killed in a shooting on Tupelo Place last year. Prosecutors said Brimmage and 32-year-old Dontrez Jones assaulted Morgan before the deadly shooting.
