Tracking the last of arctic air before a more mild week ahead
TODAY: Monday is an ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day as wind chills again reach dangerous territory this morning. It will feel near or below zero through 9 a.m. to noon across the region, before high temperatures themselves nudge just up to near 20°.
TONIGHT: Northwesterly winds relax and turn westerly into the early evening, before turning southerly and picking up pace overnight. This has wind chills again in the single digits early Tuesday.
EXTENDED: South winds push highs into the upper 30s to near 40 ahead of a cold front that approaches the region Tuesday night. This front washes out and south winds return Wednesday, making for the warmest day this week as highs are forecast in the low 40s. A more notable cold front slides in that evening, leaving us in the 30s Thursday afternoon. All along the way, skies remain bright, with mostly sunny conditions during the day, and a few clouds each night. More active weather may be on the way for later this week. We're tracking a boundary between more mild air to our south, and cold air to our north. The upper level pattern favors the jet stream nearly overhead, which favors this boundary nearby. It's location will have a big impact on temperatures and therefore precipitation chances as Friday into Saturday is set to see an increase in moisture along this boundary. A series of disturbances along this boundary is likely to bring a chance for precipitation to some across the greater mid-Mississippi Valley, and that could mean snow chances for us given the current trend towards mid-Missouri landing on the colder side of the boundary. Stay tuned for updates on potential wintry precipitation Friday and Saturday.
