Chiefs fall in Super Bowl LIX rematch against Eagles at Arrowhead
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
For the first time since 2014, the Kansas City Chiefs have started the season 0-2, following a 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl LIX rematch at Arrowhead Stadium, on Sunday.
From start-to-finish, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was head coach Andy Reid's everything man, as he tried to will this team to a comeback in the fourth quarter. With Kansas City down by 10 points and less than three minutes to play in the game, Mahomes connected on a 49-yard missile to Tyquan Thornton for a touchdown to get his team within three points of the Eagles. However, his defense couldn't stop Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley, who ran the clock down for an Eagles victory.
Mahomes ended his day completing 55 percent of his passes for 187 yards and one touchdown. He did, however, throw a critical interception in the fourth quarter, which ended up in an Jalen Hurts touchdown, courtesy of the infamous 'tush push.'
The passing game was a struggle, yet again, for Coach Reid's team. Tight end Travis was Mahomes' go-to guy in Sunday's loss, tallying 61 yards on four receptions.
Kansas City's quarterback also led the rushing attack. for his team, with 66 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Meanwhile, running backs Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco combined for just 53 yards on 18 total carries and no touchdowns.
Offensively, Philadelphia didn't do anything too outstanding, but the Kansas City defense couldn't come up with enough stops.
Hurts completed 68 percent of his passes against the Chiefs for 101 yards and added on 16 yards and a touchdown on nine carries on the ground. Barkley complimented Hurts' day by leading the rushing attack for the Eagles with 88 yards and a score on 22 carries.
Both teams struggled with ball security in week two. The Chiefs gave up that costly interception in the fourth quarter and Hunt also ended up with a fumble. The problem wasn't one-sided, though, as Hurts also fumbled the ball.
Up next - Kansas City will continue the hunt for its first win of the season when the Chiefs travel to meet the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is slated for 7:20 p.m.
