Democratic candidates Sanders and Biden to stop in Missouri ahead of presidential primary

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

In five days, Missouri voters head to the polls to vote in the 2020 Missouri presidential primary.

The top Democratic presidential candidates are making campaign stops in the Show-Me State ahead of the election.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) was scheduled to hold a rally in Kansas City on Monday, but his campaign on Friday said the event was canceled because of scheduling issues. Sanders will now appear at a rally in St. Louis at Stifel Theatre.

Sanders' campaign is holding many events to galvanize voters this weekend. Canvassing events are being in Columbia, Jefferson City, Kansas City, St. Louis and several other cities around the state.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is also holding speaking engagements in Missouri. On Saturday, Biden is speaking at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City with U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Kansas City). Earlier that day, Biden is also speaking in St. Louis.

Former Gov. Bob Holden will stump for Biden in Springfield and participate in a phone bank. Biden's wife, Jill, will also make an appearance Monday in Kansas City at the Veterans Community Project.

Biden's campaign has received support from Missouri leaders. St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson tweeted on Wednesday she's behind the former vice president. Former Gov. Jay Nixon also said he's supporting Biden.

Sanders' campaign endorsed St. Louis Democrat Cori Bush for the congressional house seat currently held by Rep. Lacy Clay (D-St. Louis). She's speaking with Las Vegas Democrat Amy Vilela at Sanders' Columbia campaign office at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Former St. Louis state Rep. Bruce Franks said he was supporting Sanders back in February.

The Missouri secretary of state's website shows 22 Democratic candidates will be on the ballot in Missouri.

Many names on the ballot have dropped out since 2020 primaries started. Of those listed with active campaigns, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) is not making any stops in Missouri ahead of the primary.
