Tracking few storm chances into the weekend and a prolonged heat wave coming out of it

TODAY: Is relatively mild, with another day in the 80s expected. We'll feel like mid-90s with highs in the mid-80s. Humidity will clearly be present, and that will continue as yesterday's cold front lifts back north as a warm front. This may also trigger isolated to scattered thunderstorms. Today will be mostly dry, with the best chance for rain in the heat of the day, and south of I-70.

TONIGHT: Any storms developing this afternoon will collapse with sunset. Most will be dry overnight, but after midnight, we'll be watching a complex of storms near Omaha, Nebraska. This activity poses a risk of becoming a system of storms that blows our direction.

EXTENDED: These storms are mostly likely to reach our region closer to sunrise, and should be greatly weakened as it arrives. Very little severe threat will accompany these into our region, but some gusty winds may be possible on the high end in the far northwest near Macon and Brunswick. The stronger storms are expected to stay north of us and continue to spread east across Iowa and Illinois. We'll have morning shower and storm chances, but as the parent system pushes away, we'll turn drier by late morning. The afternoon sun will build heat, with many feeling like 100+, and some in the south feeling like 105+. This kicks off our ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day stretch that will last through next week. We expect daily heat index values around 105 or higher from Sunday through Friday. Some rain may be possible on Sunday, and therefore a chance at a cool down. However, as upper level high pressure builds in from the deep south, it will act as a "heat dome" bolstering afternoon highs in the 90s. This and very summer-like dew point levels in the 70s will have us feeling well into the triple digits each afternoon. Sunny skies dominate the forecast Monday onward.
