Understanding severe weather messaging

With the threat of strong to severe storms causing northern portions of Mid-Missouri to be in a threat level 2 /5, you might be wondering what exactly do those numbers mean?

When the value increases on the threat level maps, that typically means we see increased coverage and the intensity of showers and storms. Five on the scale is typically the worst case scenario that's also very rare in Mid-Missouri.

Just like a handyman or a carpenter going into work, they're gonna be needing multiple tools. This is similar for watches and warnings as it's a good idea to have the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather app. But folks, what if your phone's dead or the volume's off?

You need to have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings just like a weather radio. A weather radio is going to be one of the best things you can have in case of emergencies or overnight storms. Make sure to change batteries frequently and check your weather radio twice a year.

But just like a handyman, you wouldn't go into work with just a hammer, because what if you don't have nails and only screws? Well, I'm gonna need a screwdriver and what if I don't have screws? Well, maybe I'll need a staple gun. The same thing should be true about receiving your watches and warnings. Having multiple ways to receive weather alerts is important. That way if one way fails, you have other ways to receive those watches and warnings to make sure you and your family are staying safe.
