QUESTION OF THE DAY: Will lawmakers fix the school calendar issues around snow days?
Missouri's rules for public school instruction time and how inclement weather affects that time have caused some issues for school districts.
At least one legislator says the new rules -- which went into effect this school year and use extra funding to incentivize more instruction time, even on snow days -- are weighted against districts with four-day weeks. Others say the rules make districts choose between student and staff safety and state funding.
And in Columbia, the new rules required a calendar change this year and making snow days into "AMI days." Students are encouraged to focus on enrichment activities and review on AMI days. The AMI stands for alternative methods of instruction.
Lawmakers are working on what they think are solutions to the problems. But the legislature is a busy place and it's not clear whether such legislation will make it to the governor's desk.
