Mizzou women’s basketball narrowly misses out on a win in Oxford

OXFORD, Miss. (KMIZ)

A much-needed upset was within Mizzou women's basketball's reach, on Sunday afternoon. However, a chance to tie the game in the final seconds fell just short, as guard Laniah Randle's potential game-tying layup was slightly off the mark.

Head coach Robin Pingeton and company lost their third-straight game in a heartbreaking 68-66 defeat at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 13-16 on the season and 2-12 in Southeastern Conference play.

The second half, once again, spelled trouble for Coach Pingeton's team.

MU led by 10 points at halftime, but, as has been the story of the season, lost their grove in the third quarter. In that first 10 minutes after the break, Ole Miss out-scored Mizzou 29-11 to gain a lead entering the fourth quarter. That ended up being the hole that the Tigers could not dig themselves out of for their 12th loss in SEC action.

Despite a miss on the shot that would've sent the game into overtime, Randle was one of three MU players to get into double-digit scoring on Sunday. Star sophomore guard Grace Slaughter led the charge with 18 points, while junior Ashton Judd was right behind her with 17. Randle ended her day with 13 points, along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

In addition to the second half struggles, turnovers were also a problem for the Mizzou women down in Mississippi. The team was just three turnovers shy of matching the high on the season, with 23.

Up next - Mizzou will wrap up the 2024-25 regular season with two more games in the next week. First, the Tigers will travel to face Arkansas on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Then, Pingeton's team will wrap up the season in a home meeting with Vanderbilt on Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m.
