Four dogs die in Mexico house fire

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Four dogs died in a basement fire Friday in Mexico.

An off-duty firefighter saw smoke from inside a home in the 1200 block of Hendricks Drive a little before noon Friday, according to a Mexico Department of Public Safety news release. The fire was contained to the basement, which sustained moderate damage. The rest of the home had smoke damage.

Firefighters rescued three dogs but four others died in the fire, the department says. The fire likely started in an area where too many appliances and other devices were plugged into a power strip, the release says.

The power strips and cords were also covered in "personal items," the release says.

No people were home at the time of the fire.
