COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The parents of a Phelps County baby who died of a fentanyl overdose last year are in custody.

Caleb Deon Gorman, 25, of Salem, and Corissa Dessie Botkin, 24, of Rolla, are charged with child abuse resulting in death. Gorman was arrested Tuesday morning and Botkin was arrested that evening, the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office wrote on its social media on Wednesday. Both are being held at the Phelps County Jail without bond.

A probable cause statement was not filed in either case. Hearings for both people are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The social media posts say a 14-month-old girl died of fentanyl poisoning on March 9, 2023.

"This is an incredibly heartbreaking situation," Sheriff Michael P. Kirn said in the post. "Our primary concern is for the well-being of children in our community, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served in this case."

“The Phelps County Sheriff's Department and Phelps County Coroner will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this case and are asking anyone with information to come forward,” the post says.
