Two corrections officers plead guilty in death of mentally ill man in Alabama jail

The Associated Press/Report For America

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Two corrections officers have agreed to plead guilty to federal charges related to the death of a mentally ill man who died of hypothermia in jail. Daniel Lee Allan Brown and Megan Johnson were both corrections officers working at Walker County Jail when Tony Mitchell was arrested in 2023. Mitchell was kept naked in a concrete cell with no bedding or running water for two weeks. According to the plea deal, Johnson denied a nurse access to Mitchell and falsely claimed that he was “too combative” for medical attention. Brown’s plea deal says he did not to take “reasonable steps” to save Mitchell’s life.
