Flooding causes Maries County R-1 School District to not hold in-person classes Thursday

MGN

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Flooding from recent storms will cause the Maries County R-1 School District to not hold in-person classes on Thursday, the school district wrote on its Facebook page on Wednesday night.

"Due to the local flooding and Hwy 63 closing, Maries R-1 will NOT be in session on Thursday, November 7, but WILL BE participating in AMI Day 1. Students must complete AMI Day 1 and return all work on their first day back to school. Please stay safe!" the post reads.

The district shared a post from Maries County Emergency Management saying Highway 63 at the Gasconade River Bridge south of Vienna is closed because of water being at the edge of the roadway.

Storms rolled through Mid-Missouri on Monday that especially impacted the southern portion of Mid-Missouri. Power outages impacted Pulaski, Phelps and Maries counties.

Gov. Mike Parson signed an executive order on Tuesday to activate the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan in response to flooding around the state, following the storms. The order is expected to expire on Thursday, Dec. 5.

"With several areas of Missouri already impacted by this week’s storms and heavy rainfall, we want to ensure state resources are available should further disruptions or damage occur,” Parson said in a Tuesday press release. “This action enables the state to be better prepared and ready to assist our communities with response and recovery. We urge Missourians to follow the direction of local authorities and emergency managers, use extra caution on the roads, and never drive into floodwaters.”
