Chiefs remain unbeaten, as Mahomes hits career landmark
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KMIZ)
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for more than 260 yards and two touchdowns to help lift Kansas City to a 27-20 over the rival Raiders, on Sunday. In the win, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion also hit a big career landmark, as he passed 30,000 career passing yards, in the second quarter.
Mahomes reached 30,000 yards faster than any other quarterback in NFL history, in his 103rd game in the league. The previous record was held by Matthew Stafford, who hit that mark in 109 total games. You might remember, Mahomes was also the fastest quarterback to reach 20,000 career yards back in 2022, as well.
He utilized his playmakers in Sunday's win over Las Vegas, as Mahomes threw touchdown passes to both tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Kelce's touchdown grab was also a career moment. The future hall of famer became just the fifth tight end to reach 75 career touchdowns, on a catch that made it a 14-10 advantage for KC less than two minutes before halftime.
Heading into the locker room with a 17-10 lead, after a 42-yard field goal from Harrison Butker, Kansas City's rivalry game was a little closer for comfort than fans would have liked. In fact, in the third quarter, Las Vegas made it a four-point ball game, courtesy of a 32-yard field goal off the leg of kicker Daniel Carlson.
However, as they've done so many times in the fourth quarter this season, the Chiefs shut the door on the Raiders. Butker hit another field goal to make it a one-score game. Then, Mahomes assembled an eight-play, 38-yard drive which all ended in a nine-yard touchdown pass to Worthy to, essentially, put the game away.
The Raiders did score on one final push with likes than three minutes in the game, but to no avail.
Mahomes ended the day going 27/38 for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw his eighth interception of the season, though, as he has one in every single game in 2024.
Kelce was his go-to guy in the passing game, as he finished with 10 catches for 90 yards and one touchdown.
Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins made his Kansas City debut on Sunday, after being traded from the Tennessee Titan earlier in the week. He ended the day with two catches for 29 yards.
Mizzou alum Nick Bolton led the charge, defensively, for KC. The former Tiger star led the team with nine total tackles. Collectively, his defense got a lot of pressure on Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew, as the group registered five sacks.
