Task Force 1 gets new orders from FEMA in Helene-devastated North Carolina

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An urban search-and-rescue team based in Columbia received new orders from FEMA to deploy cadaver dogs Tuesday.

The team left at about noon Tuesday from the team's Boone County Fire Protection District headquarters. They were scheduled to touch down in Charlotte, North Carolina, at about 5:30 p.m. Columbia time and stay overnight before getting their assignments Wednesday, according to a post from the fire district on Facebook.

Dozens of Task Force 1 members have been in North Carolina since last week to help with rescue in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The storm has caused more than 100 deaths, with most of them in the mountainous terrain of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Team members already in North Carolina are working in McDowell County. They covered 32 miles of road across 10,000 acres on Monday, the post says. The fire district previously said Task Force 1 was working in and around the Pisgah National Forest.
