Fire at Sedalia landfill possibly caused by spark from equipment

Sedalia-Pettis County Emergency Management Agency

PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A fire at the Central Missouri Landfill in Sedalia Monday on afternoon was possibly caused by a spark from the equipment that moves trash and compacts it, according to the Pettis County Fire Department.

Around 3:20 p.m., PCFD says it received calls of possible explosions at the landfill on Oak Grove Lane between Broadway and the Low Water Crossing. The area was closed for several hours while crews worked to put out the blaze.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a large amount of shredded tires used to weigh down the tarps to prevent soil erosion of the hillside that had caught on fire and the fire was moving fast towards the impacted trash area.

Crews on scene investigated and found no equipment was on fire and there were no explosions.

Just before 6 p.m., the smoke from the fire had subsided, but county fire trucks were still going in and out of the landfill to put out several hot spots.

At 8:48 p.m., The Sedalia Fire Department said the fire was under control.

No injuries were reported.

Residents on social media said the fire could be seen as far as Boonville.
