Donovan’s big day at the dish lifts St. Louis to a win in the 2024 season finale

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals ended an up and down 2024 season with one last series win, courtesy of a 6-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

Brendan Donovan showed up big for his team, as he finished the season on a 2-for-3 outing. He hit a solo home run for the Birds in the third and then followed that up with an RBI single just a couple of innings later.

Two other Cardinals also drove in runs, on Sunday. Alec Burleson made an impact in the final game of 2024, as well, with two RBI singles in both the fifth and sixth innings. Jose Fermin also got in on the action with an RBI single to bring home Michael Siani in the sixth.

St. Louis fans got another glimpse of pitcher Michael McGreevy, who started his third game of the year, in the season finale. The rookie improved to 3-0, as he allowed just one earned run on five hits. McGreevy struck out six batters over the course of eight innings.

The Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention, officially, on Sept. 20. The club ended the season with 83-79 mark and missed the postseason for the second-straight year. Keep in mind, STL has not made it past the NL Wild Card series since 2019.

It may have been the last time that Red Bird fans got to see seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt in a Cardinals jersey. Before Sunday's game wrapped up, the Athletic reported that the team intends to part ways with the 37-year-old in the offseason. His five-year contract did come to an end at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Up next - the Cardinals will prepare to flip the page in 2025.
