Mizzou volleyball hosts annual black and gold scrimmage
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou volleyball team welcomed fans into the Hearnes Center for the first time in 2024 for the program's annual black and gold scrimmage.
You can watch extended highlights from the first couple sets of the scrimmage in the video player below.
Head coach Dawn Sullivan has assembled a good mixture of returning and new talent for the upcoming season. To no one's surprise, the stars of this Tiger team were shining bright on Sunday afternoon. Middle blocker Colleen Finney, rightside hitter Jordan Iliff and leftside hitter Janet deMarrais put on a show for Tiger fans.
While the leaders of the 2024 team picked up right where they left off, freshman Tia Phinezy made her Hearnes Center debut, with a show of power. In total, Coach Sullivan added 11 players in the offseason, six freshmen and five transfers.
During the scrimmage, Oregon State transfer Mychael Vernon, a 2023 All-Pac-12 selection, looked like she felt right at home. Texas-transfer Marina Crownover (a two-time national champion setter), Illinois State transfer Regan Haith and UTRGV transfer Kiaraliz Perez Catala all also made their Hearnes Center debuts.
Mizzou will look to follow up a successful first season under Coach Sullivan. In year one, she led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2020 and was selected as the SEC Coach of the Year.
Up next - MU will host Omaha in an exhibition match on Sunday, Aug. 25. First serve is set for noon.
