Man booked into Callaway County Jail charged with murder in Fulton shooting
FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man who was booked into the Callaway County Jail on Monday has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Jakiem Braggs.
Mitchell Henderson Jr., 44, of Columbia, was charged with first-degree murder and illegal gun possession. Fulton police wrote on social media on Monday that Henderson Jr. had turned himself into the jail. An initial court appearance was held on Tuesday.
Police responded to a shots fired call on July 16 at the 1200 block of Kathy Street and found Braggs dead with gunshot wounds. According to a probable cause statement that was made available to media on Tuesday, a witness claimed he went outside after hearing shots being fired and saw Henderson Jr. standing in the street.
Two other witnesses allegedly told police that they saw Henderson Jr. outside. Another witness allegedly would not give names of who was outside, but claimed law enforcement had spoken with the shooter, court documents say.
According to court documents, a fifth witness allegedly told police that they saw Henderson Jr. after the shooting, and that Henderson Jr. had blood on his cheek. Henderson Jr. allegedly told that witness that Braggs pulled a gun on him, the statement says.
A search warrant was conducted at Henderson’s apartment in the 1200 block of Kathy Street later that day while police were searching for a cell phone belonging to another suspect, according to the statement. Police found a gun that was “ready to access to anyone in the residence,” the statement says.
The gun was tested at the Missouri State Highway Patrol crime lab and was allegedly matched to at least four of the spent shell casings at the scene, according to the probable cause statement. Police previously said that more than 20 casings were found at the scene.
Quirara Walton, 19, was charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Callaway County Jail without bond. A bond hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday. Emmanuel Brown, 20, was charged with accessory to first-degree murder and is being held at the jail without bond. He also has a hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday. Police say a juvenile allegedly involved is in custody with juvenile authorities.
Another man was initially charged with accessory to first-degree murder, but his charge was dropped on Monday.
Previous court documents say Walton “lured” Braggs to the area after messaging him on the social media application Snapchat. The statement described the shooting as an “ambush.”
