Lugo’s complete-game lifts Kansas City to a series sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Royals started off the second half of the 2024 season in style, on Sunday. Not only did a 4-1 win over the White Sox earn the club a sweep, but pitcher Seth Lugo tossed the first complete-game of his career.

It was evident when Lugo stepped out onto the hill for the first time, on Sunday, that his stuff was on the mark. He only allowed one run on three hits and retired 14-straight batters, as he ended the day with six strikeouts. Lugo reached a grand total of 103 pitches against Chicago.

Kyle Isbel, Hunter Renfroe, Maikel Garcia and Dairon Blanco each registered an RBI, on Sunday, however, it was a pitcher's duel through much of the game.

The White Sox's Drew Thorpe only allowed three single in six shutout innings, before relief came in in the seventh inning.

Once Justin Anderson took over on the bump, the Royals found their swing. Down by one run in the seventh, Kyle Isbel hit a sacrifice grounder to the pitcher to tie the game and score Garcia. In the eighth, Hunter Renfroe broke up the tie with an RBI single to right field. KC went on to score two more runs in the eighth to get up 4-1.

With Sunday's win, Kansas City improved to 55-45 overall. It's just the third time in the last 40 years that Kansas City has won 55 out of its first 100 games.

Up next - the Royals will continue the home stand with a three-game set against the Diamondbacks. First pitch against Arizona is slated for 7:10 p.m. on Monday, July 22.
