Women’s Intersport Network for Columbia hopes to boost young athletes’ confidence

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Female high school athletes in Columbia got a confidence boost Tuesday at the Women's Intersport Network seminar at Hickman High School.

According to a study by the National Library of Medicine involving 200 high school athletes aged 16 and 17, about 91% reported experiencing some level of stress related to sports.  Fear of failure and self-pressure were the most common causes of stress.

This National Library of Medicine graph shows the percentage of female athletes reporting levels of stress.

WIN for Columbia hosted a free seminar for girls in grades 9-12 who attend a high school in Columbia. Participants explored key topics and learned strategies for excelling in leadership and life by connecting with other girl athletes in Columbia.

Topics included imposter syndrome, body image and fitness, mental resilience and support, focus and movement, coach and player dynamic and social media image, risk and awareness.

Mitzi Clayton, president of the board of WIN for Columbia, said she believes there is a gap regarding the tough topics that female athletes face today.

“To participate in a sport and achieve in a sport, we know there are so many life lessons that can be gained," Clayton said. "By hosting this seminar and bringing in local professionals, all-Americans, and national champions, we are providing the insight we think these girls need.”

Former collegiate athlete Brandi Spurling praised the event for bringing together female athletes.

“The topics they’re discussing are what I needed as an athlete but didn’t always get,” Spurling said. “Making this a regular part of an athlete’s experience is such a great opportunity.”

Madeline Daller, a student-athlete from Hickman High School, who is dealing with multiple injuries, found the seminar beneficial for her recovery.

“The presenters are very positive, which helps me with body image,” Daller said. “They also provide tips on how to improve as an athlete and build confidence.”

The Women's Intersport Network is also actively involved in other local initiatives dedicated to supporting female athletes around the Columbia area.
