Cardinals shut out Nationals, claim four-game series win
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KMIZ)
After posting a record four games above the .500 mark in the month of June, the Cardinals have carried that momentum over to July. St. Louis clinched a four-game series victory over Washington with a 6-0 win in Monday's finale, giving the Redbirds a 5-2 start to the new month.
Miles Mikolas' effort on the mound was at the center of Monday's victory. The right-hander tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up just six hits and striking out three batters. Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero sealed the shutout in relief of Mikolas, combining to pitch the remaining 2.2 innings while only allowing two hits.
Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson led the way at the plate. Goldschmidt ended the afternoon 2-for-5 with his 12th home run of the season while Burleson also posted a 2-for-5 performance, including his 14th home run of the campaign and three RBIs. Brendan Donovan, Michael Siani and Nolan Gorman also recorded two hits each as part of an 11-hit effort by St. Louis.
Up next- the Cardinals welcome the Royals to Busch Stadium for the first installment of the I-70 series in 2024. The first contest of this brief two-game series is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at 6:45 p.m.
