Boone County: Capital improvement sales tax extension

The Boone County ballot is mostly devoid of local primaries.

However, voters in Columbia will see an important question on their ballots. The ballot issue asks for voters to extend for 10 years the city's capital improvement sales tax, which has been used for major infrastructure projects such as the widening of Forum and Nifong boulevards.

The city's current capital sales tax will expire on Dec. 31, 2025.

The money raised would also go toward public safety, with the fire department receiving an estimated $15.5 million and police getting $16 million, according to a city website with information about the tax. Most of the money will be used for streets and sidewalks -- about $80 million.
