Tracking storms overnight, cooler Wednesday

TONIGHT: Storms late, some could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain. Lows in the lower 70s.

TOMORROW: Morning storms exit by midday. Partly cloudy with highs in the upper 80s.

EXTENDED: The main severe threat will hold off until very late tonight, likely well after midnight. It's still somewhat unclear when a complex of severe storms will develop ahead of the cold front across Iowa this evening, but generally severe storms are expected to move in north of Highway 36 after midnight, and progress south overnight into tomorrow morning. Heavy rain on the order of 1-2" is possible, and 60 mph winds will be the primary severe threat. Storms exit before midday tomorrow, leaving us with some cloud cover and cooler temperatures in the upper 80s. Thursday will be comfortable with lower humidity and highs in the upper 80s. I'll be tracking a warm front that moves in between Thursday and Friday, bringing a chance for a few storms and hotter weather on Friday. Highs reach the low 90s with a heat index in the upper 90s. Storms are possible yet again between Friday and Saturday as a cold front moves through, with dry time in between. Behind the front, Sunday is cooler with highs in the low to mid-80s. A similar pattern is setting up for next week as upper high pressure forces the jet stream back north, meaning we can expect highs in the 90s yet again.
