Insider Blog: First named storm of hurricane season forms

The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st and the first named storm of the season has now formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico. This broad storm could bring flooding across much of southern Texas.

Alberto is tracking on the rim of a heat dome across the eastern U.S., forcing it due west into central Mexico. But this system is fairly broad even for a tropical storm with heavy rainfall possible across much of the Gulf coast.

The threat of flooding stretches along all of the Texas coast with up to a foot of rainfall possible between Wednesday and Thursday. This system will not reach hurricane strength and is expected to dissipate into the weekend.
