Crash leaves Jefferson City Habitat for Humanity house uninhabitable; driver arrested

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Habitat for Humanity house in Jefferson City has been rendered uninhabitable by a crash involving a man accused of driving drunk.

The house at 1612 Edmonds St. was hit by a Sedan a little before 11 a.m., according to a Jefferson City Police Department news release. The driver, John McNew, 23, of Jefferson City was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk and a resident of the home was treated for minor injuries, police say.

McNew, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not hurt.

Police had to restrict traffic for about 90 minutes after the crash, according to the release.

Dave Helmick, Jefferson City's housing property supervisor, wrote in an email that an inspection showed the home was uninhabitable and Habitat for Humanity shored up the structure for security purposes. The homeowner is getting in touch with insurance to get the damage repaired, Susan Cook, executive director of River City Habitat for Humanity, wrote in an email.

Information about McNew's charges was not available in online court records late Monday.
