Columbia mayor presents Pride Month proclamation

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe on Monday presented a proclamation for LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

The proclamation welcomes people from all walks of life to Columbia. Pride Month is recognized in June.

Buffaloe emphasized the importance of recognizing people with diverse backgrounds and different gender identities and sexualities.

“That’s what pride month is, its recognizing the history… Going to 1969 and the riots that happened (Stonewall in New York) where people were being discriminated against, and recognizing the strength of coming together and supporting the community,” Buffaloe said.

Earlier this year, the Columbia City Council approved a safe haven ordinance in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
