An inmate died at the Cole County Jail on Saturday, according to Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler.

A press release states at approximately 3:41 p.m., Cole County deputies found an inmate unresponsive in their cell. The identity of the inmate was not shared.

The release said staff started life-saving measures and called 911. EMS arrived at the jail at 3:52 p.m. and made several attempts to resuscitate the inmate.

The inmate was declared dead at 4:28 p.m. Saturday.

The release states the Callaway County Sheriff's Department also responded and was on scene within 30 minutes. Their department has agreed to do an independent investigation into the death.

An email ABC 17 News received from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office states that the Cole County County Detention staff found an unresponsive older male who was being housed alone in a medical cell.

The email from the Sheriff's office also says the initial investigation does not indicate any signs of foul play. An autopsy will be performed sometime within the week, according to the email.

They were unable to provide a name for the inmate.
