City of Sedalia announces debris pickup for storm damage
SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The City of Sedalia wrote on its website that debris pickup will take place throughout the city over the next two or three weeks.
Storms entered the area on Thursday and another severe storm is expected on Friday evening. More storms are expected to roll through the Mid-Missouri area over the weekend. The Sedalia Fire Department told ABC 17 News on Thursday that they ran around 18 calls for service in an hour and a half due to trees crashing into houses, cars, and roadways.
Like many Sedalia residents, Phil Twinter spent his late Friday afternoon clearing off some of the debris from his front yard. But the cleanup could have been much worse.
"I heard cracking last night and after the wind let up a little bit, came walking around and saw the big tree over there, half of it down. Fell all across the street in the yard here," Twinter said.
When he woke up on Friday morning the branch that was sitting in his front yard was gone. Public works crews, police officers, and firefighters worked through the night to help clear branches off the streets. Officials worked until 4 am, clearing to remove 60 dump trucks worth of tree limbs.
"They were out there working until 4 am then back out there at 6 am so if you see a city worker thank them for their hard work," Sedaila Mayor Andrew Dawson said.
Pettis County EMA director Trisha Roda tells me told ABC 17 News it will take about three weeks to finish clearing out trees. The city is working to help residents clear the branches,
“Residents having tree limbs and branches downed by the storm in their yard may move these tree limbs to the area between the sidewalk and roadway in front of their homes for pick-up by City crews over the next few weeks,” the city’s website says. “Please keep the debris out of the street and away from low overhead lines, trees, vehicles, utility poles, and mailboxes.
“If possible, limbs should be cut down to under 6 feet in length to aid crews in picking them up more quickly. City crews will get to your debris as soon as possible and anticipate having it all picked up over the next two to three weeks.”
The website says that residents can also take tree debris and vegetation to the city’s yard-waste disposal site at 27882 Route U. The site is open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, except for holidays.
