Springtime brings warmer and wetter conditions but it also means a higher chance for severe weather. Of all severe weather and disasters flooding is by far the most common threat. Flooding is associated with 90% of weather disasters throughout the year so it's important to stay prepared.

The spring in particular is the most worrisome time for floods and spring flooding is even increasing in a changing climate. We're particularly observing an increase in the highest-intensity rain events that can drop several inches of rain in a few short hours. These events can bring record-breaking precipitation amounts and vast flooding impacts.

The impacts of flooding are different depending on where you live. Rural areas will tend to run into overflowing streams and rivers that can make roadways impassable. In urban spots, the water much of the time simply has nowhere to go. Better urban infrastructure can aid in reducing flash flooding and runoff in cities.

Ahead of flood season, you should make sure you are prepared and insured. Know your personal flood risk: are you in a floodplain? Be sure you have flood insurance which is almost always separate from home insurance. It is also good to keep drains near your home clear of debris so these can work efficiently in times of heavy rainfall.
