Botched execution of serial killer in Idaho puts focus on capital punishment secrecy laws

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Last week’s botched execution of a death-row inmate in Idaho showed the secrecy around capital punishment. Idaho lawmakers strengthened the state’s execution-secrecy law in 2022. It now ensures that the identities of people or entitities involved in making or supplying fatal drugs remain confidential. The identities of the executioners do too. Such laws are typical among states that carry out executions, including Texas. Critics say secrecy makes it difficult to ensure executions are carried out constitutionally. It also makes it hard to find out what went wrong when killings were botched.
