Experts predict highest spending average for Super Bowl LVIII in over 15 years

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Super Bowl LVIII is just one week away from Sunday. Over 200 million adults are expected to tune in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers, which means Super Bowl watch parties and festivities will be underway and could cost you more than years past.

According to the National Retail Federation, people watching the game are expected to spend about $17.3 billion in total.

The average household is projected to spend about $86 on things like food, beverages, apparel, decorations, and more, based on a survey the organization conducted.

People planning to purchase for the big game will spend 80% of their spending budget on food or drinks, 13% on team sportswear, 9% on TVs, 8% on decorations, and 6% on furniture.

According to the organization's data, this year's Super Bowl is expected to have the highest total spending since 2007. The second closest total spending year was in 2020 costing $17.2 billion.

However, this year is not the highest for household spending. This year's projection is two dollars less than in 2020 when it was at $88.65.

In 2007, the average total spending for Super Bowl festivities was $8.8 billion.

Certain items may cost you a bit more or less compared to last year. According to Forbes, overall food prices are still 1.3% higher for groceries this year than last.

Fresh and frozen chicken wings are priced lower this year compared to last year. Shrimp prices are also down 6.4% from January 2023. Eggs and vegetable trays could also serve as a cheaper food purchase.

However, potato chips are up 5% in cost, and tortilla chips at 6%.

Super Bowl 58 will begin at 5:30 on Sunday, Feb. 11th in Las Vegas.
