Randolph County Sheriff’s office investigating homicide; victim had ‘goose-egg knot’ on head

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation after a man was found dead near a wood line near the 900 block of North Moulton Street in Moberly.

Corey Davis, 35, of Moberly, was found dead at 9 a.m. Monday, according to Randolph County Sheriff Aaron Wilson.

"There was some suspicious stuff with the body that we think needs further looking into," Wilson said. "We ruled it as a homicide at this point until we know differently."

Wilson stated that Davis was found with “a big goose-egg knot on his head,” and that there’s a possibility of foul play involved. Wilson stated Davis did not have wounds from a gunshot or a stabbing. An autopsy will be performed on Wednesday.

“We did find some drug paraphernalia yesterday and some bags and stuff that were left around, so we are not real sure if that’s tied to this or not or if this was left by somebody else,” Wilson said. 

No arrests have been made, but Wilson stated there are “persons of interest” who law enforcement have not spoken with yet.

Wilson stated the sheriff’s office responded with the Moberly Police Department after receiving a phone call from someone who found the body. He added that Moberly police say homeless people often use the wooded area -- where the body was found -- to camp.

Davis was reportedly staying with friends in the area at the time of his death.

“He was bouncing around from house to house. He had been staying with some friends just around the corner from there on Jefferson Street at a couple of trailers," Wilson said. "We are trying to piece it all together to figure out if there was some sort of disturbance or what happened."
