Tracking freezing rain ahead of a warmer week

TODAY: Monday is the last of our ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days, but it may be the most dangerous for travel. As warmer air returns to the region, it will encounter remnant cold air at the surface. Rain returning with this warm air, will freeze at the surface, creating icy conditions through the morning. We do expect temperatures for many to climb above freezing with more rain this afternoon, but it won't be until then that we start to see minor improvement in ice melting. Expect dangerous travel conditions for most of Monday. If you are headed to St. Louis, expect icy conditions to last into the evening.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will hold near freezing overnight, so some refreezing is possible depending on temperatures, but we will not be there long, as temperatures may begin to warm as soon as early Tuesday morning as more southerly flow returns as this system lifts north.

EXTENDED: Some of the best rainfall will come overnight into Tuesday morning, before tapering off around midday. This gives us some dry time, until late Tuesday night. Highs on Tuesday climb back into the 40s. Another system approaches from the southwest, bringing another chance for widespread showers overnight into Wednesday morning. Rain will again taper off into midday Wednesday, leaving us with some dry time. We'll stay warm with this system, with highs in the 40s. Really, all of these low pressure systems will track along a boundary that stays to our west, keeping us on the warm side of things. Expect generally drier conditions through the weekend with temperatures remaining in the 40s for highs.
