New trial scheduled for man convicted of elder abuse
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A date has been set for a trial for a man convicted in 2018 of assaulting and stealing from a 91-year-old veteran.
Driss Zarhouni was sentenced to 22 years in prison in 2018, convicted on multiple charges. Online court records show a new trial is set for Feb. 2, 2020, in the case. Zarhouni wants the charges against him dropped. A judge was assigned to the case Monday.
Court documents show Zarhouni claimed he was not given a fair trial when he was sentenced last year. The case goes back to 2016 when Zarhouni was accused of beating up a 91-year-old WWII veteran and stealing the man's car. Cooper County sheriff's deputies say they arrested him in the stolen car after the incident.
Online court records show a state public defender was assigned to Zarhouni.
