Extreme cold sets in this weekend

A low pressure system looks to move into the region Friday causing the chance for portions of Mid-Missouri to see 1-3" of snowfall, but on the back side of the snow we could see wind chills in the -10 to -20 degree range.

With extreme cold setting in, hypothermia can set in within a short duration of time. It is important to make sure you can read the early signs of this cold weather injury.

Frostbite can also set in within 30 minutes for exposed skin creating an issue for anybody potentially working outdoors during this time period or traveling. The best advice is to make sure to remain indoors during the early morning hours.

A look into Columbia's forecast for this weekend paints the picture for the possibility of wind chills to reach -17 degrees Sunday morning.

Thankfully temperatures will slightly warm into mid-week next week, but the extended forecast reveals that the overall trend continues to remain well below average. Typical average lows in Columbia for the beginning of January typically remains into the lower 20s.
