Tracking accumulating snow tonight with more winter on the way
TODAY: Monday starts dry and mild, with temperatures in the 30s early, before climbing to near 40 this afternoon. This comes as rain returns early this afternoon for some in the west. This will likely be short lived for folks north of I-70, as snow mixes in through the mid-to late afternoon. The same will happen south of I-70, as far south as I-44, but it may take until later in the evening for more snow than rain to mix in. As far as accumulations go, expect folks along and north of a line from Warsaw, to Jefferson City, to Mexico, to see accumulations begin to build in by the evening commute, making evening travel somewhat hazardous. This is where the NWS has extended a Winter Weather Advisory, for that reason.
TONIGHT: A better chance for accumulation south of this line may come after sunset as temperatures fall. Lesser totals are expected in the region. For more details on expected totals, read our ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day Blog.
EXTENDED: We'll wake up in the low 30s, possibly above freezing, early Tuesday. Temperatures will remain in the 30s, and refrain from climbing much through the day, as a wind shift will drop temperatures likely below freezing by the evening. This is where we could see a round two of snow for some. This round will generally be lighter, not accumulating as quickly. Snow will likely wrap up through the evening. Wednesday will likely warm back to near 40, with more sun forecast, and a return to south flow by the afternoon. Between the borderline temperatures during the snow event, and a warm day on Wednesday, we may see a muddy mess rather than snow sticking around this week. We're tracking another wave that could bring rain and snow back to the region by Thursday. This likely starts as a rain/snow mix late Thursday evening, and may transition to snow on Friday. This is questionable though, as we'll be tracking a situation where moisture and warmth moves in, and the cold has to rush in to switch precipitation to snow. This means that a lot has to go right for good accumulating snow. Stay tuned for more on this system, but do expect a cool down on the other side. It's looking like arctic air will be the biggest impact later this week, as the pattern pours cold into the middle of the country through the weekend. Currently, highs over the weekend are forecast in the 20s, but teens are not out of the realm of possibility.
