No. 12 Mizzou gymnastics dazzles in season opening win
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The No. 12 Mizzou gymnastics team posted a program-best season opening score to win the Mizzou Invitational, on Saturday, with a 197.150. Lindenwood came in second place in the annual invite, followed by Northern Illinois and SEMO.
The Tigers dominated from start to finish at the Hearnes Center, as head coach Shannon Welker's group managed to break that 197 mark for the first time ever in a season opener.
MU started on the vault and was led by the performances of junior Amari Celestine and freshman Hannah Horton, who each scored a team-best 9.875 on the apparatus. Through the rotation, Mizzou took an early lead over the rest of the competition and, needless to say, they never looked back.
Graduate Hollyn Patrick led the Tigers on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.875, claiming the top spot in that event.
The heat at the Hearnes Center got cranked up real high when Mizzou hit the beam. Veteran Sienna Schreiber and junior Grace Anne Davis posted the first two marks above 9.9 in 2024 for the Tigers. Schreiber led the team with a 9.925 and Davis was right behind her with a 9.900.
The meet closed out on a high note, as well. Junior standout Jocelyn Moore tied her career high and the program high with a 9.975 on the floor to place first in the event. Horton also finished out her college debut with a 9.900 for second place on the floor.
Up next - Mizzou will travel to Tuscaloosa for a meeting with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday, Jan. 12. Meet is set to start at 6 p.m.
