Man accused of hitting police officer with truck
VERSAILLES, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Macks Creek man has been charged with several felonies after authorities say he hit a police officer with a truck.
Charles Daniel Gonzales, 43, was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, resisting arrest, two counts of first-degree property damage, DWI and misdemeanor operating a vehicle on a highway without a valid license. He is being held at the Morgan County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
An arraignment is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday. In another case for misdemeanor DWI in Morgan County, a warrant was issued for Gonzales for failure to appear.
According to the probable cause statement, law enforcement received a report about a possible drunk driver at 11:45 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of West Newton Street. A Morgan County Sheriff’s deputy saw a 2019 dodge Ram heading east. A caller had allegedly witnessed Gonzales drunk at a gas station shortly before, the statement says.
Two deputies and a Versailles police officer attempted a traffic stop, but the Dodge kept going and chase ensued, the statement says. Law enforcement was able to “box in” Gonzales’ vehicle near the intersection of Newton and Monroe streets, the statement says. Gonzales was told to exit the vehicle at gunpoint and refused, the statement says.
He then allegedly put his truck in reverse and hit the Versailles police officer and his patrol vehicle. He then put the vehicle into drive, almost hit a deputy and hit the deputy’s patrol vehicle, the statement says. Gonzales was able to get through the blockade and a chase ensued once again, the statement says.
Gonzales drove up to 85 miles per hour while driving through Versailles before stopping in the 500 block of Marquis Street and got out of the vehicle, the statement says.
Gonzales allegedly got out of the truck and shouted “what!” at the deputy while trying to confront him, the statement says. The deputy used his Taser and arrested Gonzales, according to the statement. The deputy could smell alcohol on Gonzales, the statement says.
Gonzales allegedly refused a breath sample and a warrant was ordered for a blood draw was ordered, the statement says.
