A Moberly man who was accused of trying to take a police officer's gun on Wednesday has been charged.

Steven Gehring, 42, has been charged with third-degree assault, disarming a peace officer, resisting arrest and attempted unlawful gun possession. He is being held at the Randolph County Jail without bond. An arraignment has been set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Randolph County Courthouse.

According to a press release sent by the Moberly Police Department on Thursday morning, the alleged incident occurred in the 1100 block of North Morley Street.

The probable cause statement says a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle where Gehring was a passenger. The statement says the officer knew Gehring had a warrant for his arrest in Randolph County.

According to Casenet, a warrant was issued on Oct. 10 for a probation violation and a bond was set. Gehring had pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and resisting arrest in April. He was sentenced to five years of probation with a suspended sentence of five years.

The probable cause statement for Thursday’s charges state that the officer attempted to arrest Gehring, but Gehring allegedly pushed the officer to the ground and punched him in the face. The officer allegedly had his gun out of his holster and Gehring tried to grab it, the statement says.

The document states Gehring tried to run away, but police were able to handcuff him. The officer was treated at the Moberly Regional Medical Center Emergency Room, according to the statement. The officer had abrasions and a contusion on his forehead, according to court documents.
