JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man has been charged with second-degree assault after a witness allegedly told police last week, that a man who died last month was assaulted in June.

A warrant was issued for Jeremy Alexander, 23, on Wednesday and a $10,000 bond was set. He was not in custody at the time of writing.

According to the probable cause statement, the witness walked into the Jefferson City Police Department lobby on Thursday, Nov. 2, and stated that Alexander assaulted a victim on June 16 in front of Missouri River Regional Library on Adams Street. The witness allegedly told police that Alexander told him that he hoped he wasn’t responsible for the victim’s death. The victim had been brought to the hospital the same day, according to the statement.

The witness allegedly told police he had been holding onto the information and needed to get it off of his chest.

No witnesses -- or the victim -- were named in the probable cause statement.

According to the statement, first responders were called to the library around 1:31 a.m. June 16 after a man – who was identified as the victim – was found slumped over and was bleeding from his head. Police were not able to determine if an assault occurred, the statement says.

The victim was brought to Capital Region Medical Center before being sent to University Hospital. He died on Oct. 29, according to the statement. The victim suffered a stroke three weeks after the alleged assault and his health declined, the statement says. He was put in the intensive care unit on Oct. 13.

Police then contacted multiple witnesses after the first reported the incident, according to the statement. One witness allegedly said that Alexander told him he “bashed the victim’s head on the ground in front of the library,” according to the statement.

Two other witnesses allegedly told police that Alexander attacked the victim while the victim was sleeping on a park bench. One of those witnesses allegedly saw the attack occur and saw the victim bleeding from his nose and eyes afterwards, the statement says.

Another witness was described as a pastor, who told police he saw injuries on Alexander’s hands during a funeral on June 16, the probable cause statement says. The statement also says Alexander admitted to assaulting the victim at the library.

According to court documents, an autopsy was ordered to determine a cause of death. The probable cause statement says medical records apparently indicated the victim had injuries on his face and there was bleeding around the brain.

The victim’s brain is being examined to determine if the hemorrhages caused his death, according to the statement.
