Mizzou ‘focusing on the details’ during bye week

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou football team will not play a game this Saturday due to the team's bye week, giving the Tigers some extra time to prepare and rest ahead of their matchup with No. 1 Georgia at Sanford Stadium on Nov. 4. The Tigers will carry a 7-1 record with them when they visit the currently undefeated Bulldogs.

Mizzou offensive coordinator Kirby Moore and defensive coordinator Blake Baker agree the team's bye week came at a good time as they prepare for the home stretch of the season.

"First, self-scout standpoint, [we have] areas we need to improve, get some guys back, we just talked about Cody, getting himself healthy, and then, get ready for these next four games," Moore said.

"You always want [the bye week] around midseason, but I do think it's coming at a really good time," Baker said. "Bye weeks usually come down to getting yourself rested and rejuvenated but also focusing on the details, and I think our guys have really bought into that."

This is Moore's first season as Mizzou's offensive coordinator, and he has helped the Tigers make some big strides offensively. Mizzou is averaging nearly 34 points per game this season as opposed to last season when the Tigers were only averaging about 25 points per game. Moore gives a lot of credit to the team's work ethic for making that happen.

"There was obviously some potential, but there was a lot of work to be done," Moore said. "Again, credit goes to our guys. The work they put in within the offseason, within the summer program, fall camp, [and] Coach Baker, the defense we get to go against every single day."

On the defensive side of the ball, Blake Baker is in his second season as the team's defensive coordinator. In Mizzou's last two games, the defense has only allowed about 17 points per game and has forced four takeaways. Baker said at Wednesday's press conference that the defense's practice preparation has benefited them the past two weeks.

"I think we improved our practice habits, just doing the little things better," Baker said. "I think that's really what improved our play over the last couple weeks is probably our practice habits more than anything."

Kickoff for Mizzou's matchup with Georgia is scheduled for next Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m.
