Mizzou falls short against Tennessee, drops sixth SEC contest

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou soccer team tried to mount a second half comeback against Tennessee on Thursday night, but the Volunteers escaped Audrey J. Walton Stadium with a 3-2 win.

The Tigers have now lost six of its eight SEC matches this season. All six of Mizzou's conference losses have been decided by just one score.

Tennessee built a comfortable 2-0 lead in the match, courtesy of two goals from Sizzy Lawton.

However, Mizzou battled back in the second half after Lawton scored her second goal. Brianna Buels buried her third goal of the season to cut the Tiger deficit to 2-1 in the 54th minute. Jenna Bartels recorded an assist on the goal.

The Volunteers quickly added another goal after Macaira Midgley found the back of the net in the 58th minute, but the Tigers responded. Kylee Simmons capitalized on a penalty kick, scoring her 10th goal of the season to make it a 3-2 score. However, Mizzou couldn't complete the comeback.

Tennessee outshot Mizzou 12-7 in the match and recorded six more shots on goal than the Tigers.

Bella Hollenbach finished with six saves but allowed three Tennessee goals.

Up next - Mizzou hits the road for another SEC matchup. The Tigers will face No. 23 Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 22 at noon.
