Crane removes famous tree by Hadrian’s Wall in England that was cut down in act of vandalism

LONDON (AP) — Large sections of a much-loved tree near the Roman landmark of Hadrian’s Wall in northeastern England have been removed after the sycamore was cut down two weeks ago in an act of vandalism. A trust that works to protect England’s heritage and natural landscapes said it was necessary to move the downed tree to protect the now-damaged Roman wall. The 50-foot-long tree was too big to move in one piece so a crane relocated the trunk in sections on Thursday. The stump is behind a protective barrier and will be kept in place to see if it sprouts new shoots. Police arrested two people suspected of what a detective termed ab act of “senseless destruction.”
