Columbia police address online rumors involving weekend crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Columbia Police Department addressed on its social media Monday afternoon rumors that have been circulating online around a fatal weekend crash, including one claiming an off-duty police officer was involved.

"Columbia Police are aware of rumors circulating on social media regarding the motorcycle fatality that occurred Oct. 7," CPD wrote in the post. "During their investigation, officers spoke with witnesses who observed the crash at the scene and reported this was a single vehicle accident involving only the motorcycle. Witnesses said multiple passersby pulled off the road after the crash to render aid until first responders could arrive on scene."

According to previous reporting, John Martin died from a Saturday night crash on Rock Quarry Road in Columbia near Riback Road. He was 26.

Martin was heading south on Rock Quarry when he went off the right side of the road and hit a fence, according to a Sunday post from CPD. Police stated he was not wearing a helmet.
