Mizzou’s Harrison Mevis earns SEC weekly honors after record-breaking field goal
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Following his record-setting 61-yard field goal on Saturday against No. 15 Kansas State, Mizzou kicker Harrison Mevis was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week, on Monday.
With seconds left in the game against the Wildcats, Mevis, fondly known as the 'Thicker Kicker,' knocked in the longest field goal in SEC history to capture a top-25 win for the Tigers. He also made kicks of 25 and 30 yards, averaging 64.3 yards on six kickoffs with five touchbacks and converted three extra points to close out the 12-point day.
The 61-yarder is the second-longest kick in Mizzou history, behind Tom Whelihan's 62-yarder against Colorado in 1986. However, the long-range kicks are nothing new for Mevis. It was his 11th career field goal of 50 yards or more, which is six more than Whelihan had in the record books. With his kick, the Thicker Kicker also matched thee program record of 66 career field goals, tying Andrew Baggett for the top spot on the list.
It was the second game-winner Mevis has hit in his MU career. His first came against Arkansas in 2020. It was a bit of redemption for Mevis, as he missed out on a would-be game winner against Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2022.
Up next - Mevis and Mizzou will travel to St. Louis to host Memphis at the Dome on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
