Gabon’s junta frees deposed president on health grounds and appoints a new prime minister

LIBREVILLE, Gabon (AP) — Gabon’s junta has freed the country’s deposed president on health grounds and appointed a new prime minister. The military said ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has been under house arrest since he was deposed last week, is now free and can travel abroad for treatment. The junta’s statement came on Wednesday as its members met with various local and regional authorities, promising a better life for Gabonese. Ondimba’s state of health is not clear but he suffered a stroke in 2018. The new military leader, Gen. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, met with the regional envoy and senior government officials and spoke about the “promising prospects” of a transition.
