ROLLA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 45-year-old Rolla man was seriously injured Wednesday after his car left the roadway and went airborne before ejecting him.

James Smith was flown to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries following the crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Smith was not wearing a seatbelt when his 1991 Chevrolet 1500 drove off the left side of the road, causing the car to go airborne where it overturned and ejected Smith.

The accident happened at around 10 Wednesday night, in Phelps County, near Highway 63 just two miles south of Edgar Springs.

MSHP is investigating the incident.
